Hello my name is Larry Nolan - I’m a certified personal trainer, fitness expert, and president of Hardcore Fitness. Who Else Wants To Get An Edge Over The Competition?

Everyone wants to be a winner, to be successful and admired for their achievements but how many individuals are willing to put forth the hard work and sacrifice to get there?

How can I train differently to become a better athlete?


Most young athletes that start “working out” are introduced to traditional strength training exercises like a bench press. While this exercise has its place, athletic performance is built around more than just muscular strength. Most sports require integration of major muscle groups with speed, quickness, agility and balance. The fact is traditional strength training exercises are not enough to improve athletic performance.

Take the bench press example. You can develop upper body strength with this exercise but can it be totally transferred to the sport? In a game you’ll need strength while on your feet, moving and probably somewhat off balance. The bench press is completed on your back! If you're on your back I'm pretty sure you're not going to be in on the play. Over the past several years’ research in athletic training has shown that adding functional exercise to traditional strength training routines helps to improve overall performance. Does that mean we won't ever do a bench press. Absolutely not. The bench press is a good exercise but you need to use additional training methods if you want to be a total athlete.

So what is this "functional exercise?"

Functional exercise is training your body in a way that will improve the movements completed during sport activity. Many times you’ll see these exercises require little to no equipment. The objective is always to improve speed, power, quickness, strength, and balance. The best peice of exercise equipment you have is your own body!
